Ontario Welsh Festival 2023
Date: April 21-23, 2023
Plans are well in hand for the Ontario Welsh Festival for 2023. It will be held at the downtown Hilton Garden Inn and the concert and Gymanfa will take place at Christ Church Cathedral, just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.
While some events are still in the planning stages, you can be assured that there will be all your usual favourites: the Welcome Tea, with Mary Muckle at the harp, the Marketplace, the Friday evening Noson Lawen, followed of course by informal singing, and the formal Banquet with the presentation of the Gold Award on Saturday.
A very special tour of Ottawa with a ‘Welsh Flavour’ is being planned by David Jeanes for Saturday afternoon, with special emphasis on Welsh settlers, personalities and connections in the city. Other events for Saturday, including a possible seminar or a film, are in the planning stages.
Our Saturday evening concert, to be held at Christ Church Cathedral, will feature several solo artists from Wales. Renowned baritone John Ieuan Jones has accepted our invitation to headline the concert, and negotiations continue with other talented singers.
We will share a friendly brunch at the hotel on Sunday morning, before walking to the cathedral for the highlight of the weekend, the Gymanfa, with Alan Thomas at the organ. It will start at 12.30 p.m.
Registration for the Festival will begin at the end of January- check out our website then: Ontario Welsh Festival
Some of us enjoyed a mini holiday the last time the Gymanfa was in town by staying at the Festival hotel. If you’d like to do this again, the hotel is offering a special Festival rate of $179 plus taxes per night. Just phone them at 1-800-445-8667 or 613-234-6363 to reserve a room (mention you are with the Ontario Welsh Festival) or use this link to book online: Hilton Garden Inn – Events
It will be a wonderful weekend – an opportunity to meet old friends, make new ones and sing your hearts out! Please reserve the date and join us. And if you’d like to help out in any way, please email Alison Lawson at alisonlawson@rogers.com.

Ottawa Welsh Film Festival 2023
Date: March, 2023
The Ottawa Welsh Society is very pleased and proud to announce our second film festival, which will take place at the Bytowne Cinema on four consecutive Monday evenings in March 2023, starting on Monday, March 6. The showings are scheduled to start at approximately 6:45 pm. We have a fascinating and varied lineup of films for you.
March 6: Mr. Jones In English. 2019.
Directed by Academy Award winner Agnieszka Holland, and starring James Norton of Granchester fame, this harrowing tale recounts the story of the Welsh journalist Gareth Jones who was posted in Moscow during the Stalin era, and travelled to Ukraine against all advice and regulations to investigate the rumours of the famine.
The year was 1933, and Stalin’s policy of collectivization led to the man-made famine that killed millions of Ukrainians – the Holodomor. Jones’s attempts to inform the Western world of these tragedies were thwarted by the conventional press, notably Walter Duranty of the New York Times. But, on his return to Britain, and against much opposition, Jones managed to get his story taken seriously.
March 13: Patagonia In Welsh and Spanish, with English subtitles. 2010.
This Welsh-Argentinian drama was filmed in the glorious scenery of Patagonia, Southern Argentina. It was the British entry for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards of 2012.
The film tells two parallel stories – one of young Welsh couple Gwen and Rhys (Nia Roberts and Matthew Gravelle) who travel to Patagonia where Rhys is commissioned to photograph the Welsh churches in the area, and meet local guide Mateo (Matthew Rhys). Simultaneously, Cerys (Marta Lubos), an elderly Welsh Argentinean woman decides to travel to Wales to search for her roots.
March 20: Morfydd In Welsh, with English subtitles. 2018.
Morfydd Llwyn-Owen (1891-1918) was a prolific Welsh composer, pianist and mezzo soprano. Having graduated from university in Cardiff, she was accepted at the Royal Academy of Music, and while in London was a member of several influential intellectual circles. The film is a sweeping tale of her musical and personal life, and her eventual tragic death at age 27.
March 27: American Interior In English and Welsh, with subtitles. 2018
This quirky film follows Gruff Rhys of the Welsh rock group Super Furry Animals as he traces the route of his 18th century ancestor, John Evans, across the great plains of the United States of America. Evans was searching for a lost tribe of Welsh speaking Indigenous Americans – the Madogwys. It will take you by surprise!
“There are maps, cartoons, lantern slides. It’s high entertainment, like Mark Twain gone multimedia” -Nigel Andrews, Financial Times, May 2014.

Film Night
Date: Sunday, November 20th, 2022 on Zoom
Time: 7 pm
Film: Eldra (2003)
S4C has granted us permission to present the film Eldra. This 2003 film was selected as Britain’s entry into the Best Foreign Language film for Academy Awards. It is presented in Welsh, with English sub-titles – good practice for the Welsh language students out there.
Based on a true story, Eldra Jarman (Iona Jones) is a spirited young girl who cannot concentrate on her studies. Instead, her imagination focuses endlessly – and fittingly – on a fox she’s seen running wild. Over summer vacation, this wild child visits family in a small village, where she effortlessly garners the attention of a posh young man named Robat (Gareth Wyn Roberts) and his dour older brother, Taid (John Ogwen). Her Gypsy-like whimsy soon brings her much attention. (IMDB)

A Theatrical Reading from ‘Carwyn’ on Zoom
Date: Saturday, May 7, 2022
Time: 5:00 pm
Join us for the next program in ‘NAFOW-Off Season’
A Theatrical Reading from ‘Carwyn’
Written by Owen Thomas, directed by Gareth Bale and performed by Simon Nehan
Carwyn is a new play about Carwyn James, who, to this day, remains the only Coach to mastermind a series victory for the British Lions against the All Blacks. The play will unravel the enigma of a multi-layered man. A man ahead of his time. A man who was alone in a crowd. A man uncomfortable in his own skin. A man of whom it is said very few truly knew him, knew what made his heartbeat and his mind tick. In his 53 years Carwyn James made an incredible, indelible impact on his homeland. A man who adored sport, culture and politics, a man who adored Wales. A closeted man of contradictions, with a career that took in teaching, broadcasting, coaching, even espionage.
Carwyn James died alone in an Amsterdam hotel room in January 1983. This play returns to that room and allows this unique man to have one final opportunity to look back over his short but eventful life. A life in which the beauty of the words of the ancient poets and playwrights were as important to him as the ebb and flow of the rugby ball. Writer Owen Thomas will remind the country of his birth of one of her lost sons who contributed so significantly to our sporting, cultural, political, and intellectual life.

Lessons and Carols 2021
Annwyl Gyfeillion,
This is to let you know your Executive has decided to hold our annual Lessons and Carols Service in-person this year. The venue will be the Westminster Presbyterian Church and the date is Sunday, December 12, 2021 at 3pm. Rev. Chris Clarke of Westminster and Alan Thomas will be participating.
We are excited, yet nervous, as we make this decision. We recognize that the pandemic has abated but not gone away. As a result, we ask that all people attending bring proof of vaccination, wear a mask or similar face covering, and following distancing guidelines. We will make seating arrangements in the church to help ensure distancing.
Sadly, there will be no Te Bach so you won’t have to avoid my Welsh cakes.
Hopefully these arrangements give you sufficient comfort to venture out. We hope to see you there.
Cadwch yn ddiogel.
Stay safe.

President, OWS

Os gawn mwy na 8 person, bydd Mexicali Rosa’s yn fodlon i gadw bwrdd i ni- felly, danfonwch nodyn i mi os rydych yn bwriadu dod.
Mae’n ddrwg gen i na fydd y criw sydd dim yn byw yn Ottawa yn gallu ymuno a ni tro yma.
Dear Friends,
Summer is almost over and it is time to have a chat! Zoom has served us well but let’s meet in person this time. Come to the patio at Mexicali Rosa’s, Dow’s Lake Pavilion, at 7 o’clock Monday, September 6. The learners are very welcome to join us to come and practice your Welsh! If there are more than 8 of us, the restaurant is willing to reserve us a table, so please let me know if you plan to attend.
I’m sorry that we can’t include our regular attendees who live outside Ottawa this time.

2021 Ontario Welsh Festival Cancelled
Annwyl Gyfeillion,
It is with great sadness that the OGGA Board has decided to cancel our 60th Anniversary Gwyl Ontario, scheduled for Niagara Falls in April 2021.
This was not an easy decision. Several factors contributed, all COVID-19 related. The pandemic is ongoing, with decisions by various levels of government that have affected border crossing, social distancing, and maximum numbers that can safely gather indoors. The demographics of our Welsh community, and the role of singing in close proximity in potential transfer of the virus are also considerations. Choirs are unable to practice and travel is curtailed.
We had a contract with one of the Niagara Falls hotels that would penalize us significantly if we chose to proceed in hope but have to cancel closer to the date of the Festival. By cancelling now, our maximum at-risk cost is our deposit, but we are negotiating with the hotel to transfer the booking and deposit to 2022.
The OGGA Board is considering options for a smaller gathering for April/May 2021, perhaps in Toronto, that would be logistically easier to stage should circumstances allow. We will keep you informed,
Pob Bendith
Geraint Lewis
Llywydd Cymdeithas Gymanfa Ganu Ontario.

Zoom live performance of “Grav”
Date: Saturday, April 17, 2021
Time: 7:00 p.m.
“In October 2007 Ray Gravell, a man who for many embodied what it is to be Welsh, passed away after succumbing to complications resulting from contracting diabetes. He was 56 years old.
Known to millions for his legendary exploits on the rugby field, ‘Grav’ was and is so much more than that. An actor, a cultural icon, a father, a husband, a man with a life packed full of stories that deserve to be heard once more.
Gareth J Bale, who played the male character in the presentation of West (March 1, 2021) reprises the role of ‘Grav’ in this remarkable one-man show exploring the life and times of one of Wales’ most loved sons, Ray Gravell, written by Owen Thomas. With the blessing of Mari, Ray’s widow, and contributions from his Welsh and British Lions team mates, this one-man show … explore[s] the life of a man who was as fascinating away from the rugby field as he was on it.”

Concert: First Catch Your Peacock
Date: Sunday, October 4, 2020 Cancelled
Time: 7:30 – 9:30 pm
Location: St Luke’s Anglican Church, Somerset Avenue, Ottawa
The concert, “First Catch Your Peacock” offers a sampling of music from the Welsh bards and readings devoted to Welsh cuisine in homeland Wales and in Welsh Patagonia, Argentina.
The concert title is inspired by the opening instructions of a medieval Welsh recipe for the preparation of roast peacock to be served at banquet with feathers intact.
Complimenting the culinary readings are Welsh and South American music for harp ensemble, Welsh airs for violin and harp, songs in Welsh, a violin sonata by G.F. Handel who admired and wrote for Welsh harpists during his long sojourn in London and readings from “How Green Was My Valley” and “Up Into the Singing Mountain” by novelist Richard Llewellyn.

North American Festival of Wales On Demand
September 4-30, 2020
Virtual North American Festival of Wales 2020
Online, On Demand, September 4th through 30th, 2020.
The 2020 North American Festival of Wales (NAFOW) was scheduled to be held in Philadelphia from September 3-6. It was the first time the event was to be held in our area since 1976. Like all large gatherings, the Festival was cancelled due to the Covid crisis. Plans are already underway for next year’s festival in Ottawa and NAFOW will return to Philadelphia in 2022.
For many, Labor Day weekend just wouldn’t be the same without gathering with their Welsh friends and family and enjoying a program-packed weekend. Therefore, The Welsh North American Association has organized a virtual festival which will launch on September 4 and be available on demand at no charge on its website until Sept 30.
The extensive program includes mini-concerts, messages from friends and supporters, a mini-lecture series sponsored by the Welsh government, the winners of the new Eisteddfod poetry competition, Cinema Wales and of course, a tribute to the Gymanfa Ganu!
We invite you to check out nafow.org from September 4-30 to view all of the events, including a video presented by our own organizations, Philadelphia’s Welsh Society and Guild.
Until then, Hywl fawr!

Ontario Welsh Festival 2020
(April 17-19, 2020) CANCELLED
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Please join us for our annual weekend celebrating Welsh heritage, music and culture. The Festival headquarters will be the Lord Elgin Hotel, situated downtown at 100 Elgin Street. www.lordelgin.ca (Call to secure a room: 613-235-3333 Festival room rates: $165 /night + applicable taxes. Parking extra)
A fascinating tour of Ottawa with a ‘Welsh Flavour’, planned for Friday morning, will feature not only the important historic sights of Ottawa, but will have special emphasis on Welsh settlers, personalities and connections. It will include a stop to tour Rideau Hall, official residence of Canada’s Governors General, two of whom have interesting Welsh connections. The tour material has been extensively researched by David Jeanes, past president of Heritage Ottawa and a member of the Ottawa Welsh Society executive, whose family came from South Wales and who has spent much time throughout Wales learning about his roots. David will be your guide and he is sure to impart a wealth of information about the important role the Welsh have played in the history of Ottawa. Cost is estimated to be $25, and will take 3 hours. Sign up and get the weekend off with a great start.
There will be the usual favorites of the Welcome Tea, with Mary Muckle at the harp, the Marketplace, and the evening Noson Lawen followed by informal singing. Members of the visiting choir are sure to take part in the Noson Lawen, which adds to the entertainment and fun. The Noson Lawen will be at the First Baptist Church, 140 Laurier Ave W, which is directly across Laurier Street from the hotel.
Please be sure to join us at the Annual General Meeting on Saturday morning. The future of the Festival is dependent on your support, participation and ideas.
Following the AGM, we are hoping for an “Awr y Plant” – Children’s Hour – which may end up shorter than an actual hour. This used to be a regular occurrence, but the regulars grew into teenagers and adults. However, it is felt that there may be some children in the Ottawa area that are able to participate, which would be wonderful.
A major highlight in the Seminar spot will be a presentation by Sir Terry Matthews, a Welsh-Canadian business magnate (and Wales’ first billionaire)
After lunch, enjoy the film “Y Syrcas” – The Circus (a 92 minutes long). “When a Victorian travelling circus visits Tregaron in Ceredigion, they offer much more than entertainment for Sara, a young girl who is trapped by her grieving father’s strict rules and religion in a village seeped in superstition. Director Kevin Allen (Twin Town) tells this heart-warming and often funny tale about the town’s relationship with the troupe and Jwmbi, an elephant who died and was reputedly laid to rest behind the town’s Talbot Hotel in 1848 ”.
Following Saturday evening’s Gold Award Banquet will be the Grand Concert, which will feature CÔR CRYMYCH a’r CYLCH from South West Wales. They are well known and recognized in Wales, having competed successfully at numerous Eisteddfodau and competitions. The choir has a wide repertoire and sings in a variety of musical styles. Joining the choir will be guest soloist John Ieuan Jones, who hails from Rhos on Sea in North Wales. Winner of various awards and scholarships, John Ieuan has graduated from the Master’s Course at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester UK, with distinction. His rich and versatile baritone voice has made him a popular and admired concert singer.
As well as the concert, the afterglow at the hotel is eagerly anticipated, as it’s always a fun time to meet and chat, and sing your favourite hymns/songs
The Concert and both Gymanfa Ganu on Sunday will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, 120 Lisgar St. a 5 minute walk (according to Google) from the Lord Elgin Hotel. However, if anyone needs a ride to the church for either the concert or the two Gymanfa, please let us know at the Registration desk, and we will endeavor to hook you up with a registrant that has car space.
Visit ontariowelshfestival.ca for more information and registration.

Awr Sgwrsio i Ddysgwyr (conversation group for Welsh learners)
Our next meeting will be held on Monday, December 10, 2018 at 7 pm.
This meeting will combine the regular Awr Sgwrsio with Awr Sgwrsio i Ddysgwyr. Come and celebrate the season with a carol singing party/parti canu carolau – in Welsh, of course. Alan Thomas has agreed to play the piano for us and we will try to sing a few of the better known carols. We will try to read the words first and then sing. I will forward scanned copies in the next few days – any special requests?
I will provide egg nog and mulled wine. Chris Smart has already provided a plate of cookies. It would be great if a few others could bring some festive treats to share.
PS. The only thing you need to know for this session is how to pronounce the alphabet and:
Dw i’n hoffi …………… amser Nadolig. (eg Dw i’n hoffi canu amser Nadolig)
I like to ……… at Christmas.

St. David’s Day Gymanfa Ganu 2017
Date: Sunday, February 26th, 2017
Time: 3:00 pm
Venue: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 470 Roosevelt Ave.
Last year’s Gymanfa was a resounding success. Please join us again to sing some wonderful traditional hymns in English and in Welsh.
The Executive have invited Marilyn Jenkins to conduct the Gymanfa. Marilyn conducted the Ottawa Welsh Choral Society for 24 years, leading it to success in the Kiwanis Music Festival and on a well-received tour of Wales in 1990, and on many other adventures. She also taught music to intermediate level students for 33 years, before retiring to pursue other interests more fully. These interests include American Sign Language, voice training, quilting and dressage. She looks forward to encouraging the congregation to sing with gusto and sensitivity.
Alan Thomas will once again be at the organ, supporting the singing with his inimitable accompaniments. He is always an enjoyable addition to any Gymanfa. Alan will also be leading the Côr Alltudion Westminster, a pick-up choir, in a version of the beloved hymn, Llef.
Please bring your Welsh Hymn Book, if you have one! View the program here: gymanfa-2017-program. Feel free to print a copy to bring with you.
As always, we invite you to participate in a friendly reception (Te bach) afterwards and we would be very grateful if you could bring some goodies to share.

SOS Rugby Match at Twin Elm this Friday, July 15, 2016
We have just learned that there will be a rugby match between the Ottawa Indians and the Welsh Rhydywaun U16 team. (Rhydywaun is located between Aberdare and Glyn Neath.) This match is for under 16, i.e. school age. Should be fun. According to the referee, “they always put on a good game”.
The date is Friday, July 15th, time 6:30 p.m.
Rugby enthusiasts are encouraged to head out to Twin Elm Rugby Park in North Gower (on Twin Elm Road near Barnsdale) on Friday. The venue appears to have plenty of seating under cover.
Even if you don’t know anything about rugby, it should be a fun event for Ottawans and Welsh ex-pats alike. So if you have nothing planned, head on over.

Let’s all celebrate! The Ontario Welsh Festival is going to be in Ottawa April 22-24, 2016 and the Ottawa Welsh community is going to enjoy a feast of music.
The festival is an annual celebration of Welsh music and culture, drawing visitors from all over Canada, the United States and Wales. First held in Niagara Falls in 1961, the festival has travelled throughout the province from Ottawa to Windsor since then. This year it is our turn.
The highlight of the Festival will be a concert by Côrdydd, a prize winning mixed voice choir from Cardiff, Wales, together with extra-special guests, the world renowned Three Welsh Tenors, on Saturday, April 23. It is going to be a feast of music.
The choir’s name is a play on the word “Caerdydd”- the Welsh for Cardiff, the capital city from which they hail. The choir was founded in 2000, and over the years has grown from strength to strength. Côrdydd have won the Choir of the Festival award at the National Eisteddfod more than any other choir, four times in all – Cardiff in 2008, Wrexham in 2011, The Vale of Glamorgan in 2012 and Denbigh in 2013. They are the backing choir on most of the tracks on Bryn Terfel’s Christmas CD.
The Three Welsh Tenors, Aled Hall, Rhys Meirion and Aled Wyn Davies are fantastic. Their repertoire combines classics from opera and musicals, famous Welsh songs and hymns, and contemporary compositions – a mixture to suit everyone.
The concert will be held at Dominion Chalmers United Church, 355 Cooper St. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. If you are interested in buying some, you can get them from Book Bazaar 417 Bank St, Granata Music 1568 Merivale Rd, The Leading Note 370 Elgin St or from Myfanwy Davies at 613-526-3019.
The other highlight of the Festival will be traditional hymn singing sessions, known in Welsh as a “Gymanfa Ganu,” at Dominion Chalmers on Sunday, April 24. The public is invited, and if you have never heard the Welsh sing hymns in four-part harmony, don’t miss this opportunity to experience it and join in. There will be two sessions, one at 10.30 a.m. and one at 1.30 p.m. An added treat will be songs by Côrdydd and the Tenors during each session. There will be a free-will offering.
For more information call Myfanwy Davies at 613-526-3019 or visit our web site at www.ontariowelshfestival.ca or e-mail us at publicity@ontariowelshfestival.ca

CelticMTL2015
Saturday, May 2-3, 2015 at 9:00am – 6:00pm
CelticMTL2015 is a convention to promote and educate the population about the Celtic Nations. Some people have a habit of defining Celtic to be an Irish term. However, the Celts also include the Cornish (Cornwall, UK), the Manx (Isle of Man, UK), the Bretons (Brittany, France), the Welsh (Wales, UK), the Scottish (Scotland), and the Galicians (Galicia, Spain).
This convention will have numerous Celtic societies and organizations who will be present to showcase their heritage and introduce themselves to people who are interested in learning more about their Celtic background or even Celtic culture in general.
The convention will be taking place in the downtown campus of Concordia University both in the EV and John Molson School of Business building. There will also be demonstrations of song, dance, literature, and culture during the course of the day in the BMO theater room located inside the JMSB building. We will have associations from across the country who will attend this event to proudly represent their Celtic Societies.
Come out for this historical event where you will have the chance to meet the entire Celtic Nation in one giant setting! You might be surprised what you learn and or discover about your own background.
Free admission!

MERCHED DEWI AND FRIENDS CONCERT
What a treat for the Welsh community in Ottawa!
Merched Dewi, the Welsh women’s choir attached to Dewi Sant Welsh United Church in Toronto, and their director, Betty Cullingworth, came to Ottawa at the end of May and delighted a full house at Westminster Presbyterian Church with a wonderfully varied programme of Welsh music. They were joined for the occasion by four Ottawa `friends`, Maureen Carpenter, Jennifer Davies, Myfanwy Davies and Alison Lawson, who had sung with them on previous occasions in Toronto, Kingston and Wales.
After being welcomed by our President, Dr Pawl Birt, the choir proceeded to sing a programme of modern pieces, traditional folk songs, hymns and anthems, entirely in Welsh. It was enough to bring a tear of `hiraeth` to many eyes.
As if this wasn’t enough of a treat, the choir was joined by three talented soloists : John Griffiths, well known to Ottawa Welsh Society members for his wonderful singing, Carole Porterlance who sang two lovely songs in impeccable Welsh, and Meriel Simpson ofToronto, who joined John in a Welsh rendition of Panis Angelicus. The audience was also privileged to hear an instrumental trio, Mary Muckle(harp), Kirsten Carlson(flute and Loyda Lastra(flute) play a beautiful medley of Welsh folk tunes.
Alan Thomas accompanied throughout with his usual professional expertise.
All in all, it was a very special occasion for the Ottawa Welsh community. Many thanks to all the people who helped make the concert possible including the singers, soloists, Alan, Westminster Presbyterian Church, those responsible for providing the `te bach`, front of house volunteers, publicity people and anyone else I might have left out inadvertently.
Please come back toOttawasoon, Merched!

FAGGOTS AND PEAS AND NOSON LAWEN October 23rd 2010.
The Faggots and Peas night is a very popular event among the Ottawa Welsh community and this year was no exception. Over a hundred people gathered at Westminster Presbyterian Church to enjoy a delicious meal and to take part in the fun of a Noson Lawen. John Griffiths’ faggots and peas were fantastic, the mushy peas and gravy prepared by Jean Howard were superb, and the potatoes, peeled and cooked by Myfanwy Davies and Gaye Brittle and mashed by Haleigh were a big hit. The apple pie and ice cream provided by John Price was a perfect way to finish off the meal.
After the meal, we were all very proud to honour Stan Hughes, who was recently awarded the Order of Canada, with a special commemorative plaque presented by Dr. Pawl Birt.
We then enjoyed varied entertainment in the true spirit of a Noson Lawen. We were especially pleased to welcome the Ottawa Celtic Choir who sang two pieces in Welsh. We finished off with a sing song of popular Welsh songs, ably accompanied by Alan Thomas who also MC’ed the event.
The committee would like to give a huge round of applause to everyone who helped to make this event such a success. It wouldn’t be possible without the cooks and kitchen crew, the bar organiser and staff, the set up crew, the table layers, the hall decorators, the public address system techie, the servers, the raffle ticket sellers, the washer-uppers (these included the whole Bello family), the M.C., the ticket order taker, the treasurer and the door staff –a big THANK YOU to you all!

St David’s Day/Gwyl Dewi Sant activities:
The Ottawa Welsh community celebrated St David’s Day/Gwyl Dewi Sant in style with a number of wonderful events. The luncheon banquet, held on Saturday, February 27th, was acclaimed by all who attended as highly successful (see photographs below). It was held in the gracious Royal Ottawa Golf Club, where a delicious meal was served of traditional leak and potato soup, roast lamb and a most artistically served dessert of mixed sorbets and meringue. Our Master of Ceremonies, Myfanwy Davies, kept us entertained throughout the meal with greetings from various Welsh groups around the world, and in between, we all worked hard at answering a quiz on Wales, prepared by Myfanwy: So, who is the Welsh author who writes stories about horse racing?
Our guest speaker, Dr Elwyn Griffiths, who was accompanied by his lovely wife, Carys, regaled us with a very entertaining account of ‘y Cymro oddi cartref,’ the travels of a Welshman over his lifetime away from home. We were then entertained by a lovely programme of songs sung by local soprano, Shawne Elizabeth, ably accompanied by our own Alan Thomas. Shawne had taken the trouble to learn some songs in Welsh especially for this event and we all really appreciated her hard work.
Our annual Gymanfa Ganu was held on Sunday, February 28th at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Alan Thomas led us through the hymns, encouraging us to sing our best. The result was a very pleasing sound, especially when we sang a capella. Our accompanist on the organ, Deidre Piper, did a wonderful job of keeping up with Alan’s brisk tempo! Our three soloist, John Griffiths, Shannon Mercer and Duncan Schuthe, delighted us with some beautiful songs and we are very grateful to them for taking part in this event. It was especially poignant for many of the long-standing members of the society when John and Shannon sang Bara Angylion Duw (Panis Angelicus) as a duet as we remember them doing this when Shannon was a young girl. We were very grateful to Reverend William Ball for officiating at the Gymanfa and for joining in the singing with gusto.
None of these events would have taken place without many hours of work and preparation by the committee – please accept our thanks.
The final event of this wonderful weekend of celebration was a reception on Monday, March 1st, at the British High Commission, co-hosted by Anthony Cary, British High Commissioner, and the Wales North America Business Chamber. It was attended by a wide range of people interested in Wales. Delicious cawl, Welsh cakes and bara brith, prepared by staff at the High Commission, was served. It was a most enjoyable evening and the Ottawa Welsh Society is very grateful to the High Commission.
